Late last week the FBI issued a Public Service Announcement through their Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) division recommending all small businesses and home users reboot their internet routers.  This recommendation is coming due to "Foreign cyber actors have compromised hundreds of thousands of home and office routers and other networked devices worldwide."

The reboot is recommended, as it will slow the spread of a malware infection called VPNFilter.  As rebooting the router does not eliminate the threat, there has been a lot of debate on the value of performing the reboot.  LBMC Information Security has received several questions from clients regarding the news surrounding this recommendation.  While this threat does not target all equipment,  it is very likely that personal use home Internet routers could be affected.  Based on the information available and additional recent actions taken by the FBI since the initial alert, LBMC recommends that everyone should (at a minimum) reboot their home routers per the FBI’s recommendation.  Many of the Internet router manufacturers are recommending individuals go even further and reset the configuration, change the default passwords, and turn off remote support of their home router.

A great source of additional information can be found on Symantec’s Threat Intelligence site.  LBMC Technology Solutions encourages everyone to determine the make and model of their home router and follow the recommendations found on the Symantec page to limit the threat to your home Internet router, your networks, and information.
